The short answer
The CRCST is taken at a Prometric testing centre, with appointments available all year. It runs 3 hours for 150 questions, which is about 72 seconds each. If you do not pass, HSPA requires a 6 week wait before you may sit again, and the retake costs $140. Read from HSPA on August 9, 2026.

That is HSPA's own wording, and the useful part is throughout the year: there is no fixed national sitting to wait for, so the date is a scheduling decision rather than something imposed on you.
The clock, and what it actually gives you
You get 3 hours for 150 questions. Divide it and you have about 72 seconds a question. Nobody publishes that number; it is arithmetic, and we say so rather than dressing it up as a finding.
What it means in practice is that the clock is not the enemy most people expect. It is comfortable for reading a question properly and uncomfortable for going back and forth on one you already answered. If you have never practised against a clock, you cannot know which of those two is your problem.
Changing an answer is usually the right call
The advice to trust your first instinct is one of the most repeated things in exam folklore and one of the least supported. Studies on answer changing going back to the 1920s find the same thing: changes from wrong to right outnumber changes from right to wrong.
That does not mean second guess everything. It means that if you come back to a marked question and see a reason to change it, the reason is more often right than the instinct was.
If it goes badly
There is a mandatory 6 week waiting period between exam attempts.
Six weeks is 42 days, and the retake costs $140 again. In 2025, 5,286 people were in that position, so it is a common outcome rather than an unusual one.
You do get told which domains sank you. HSPA is also unusually frank about what that tells you:

Read it as a direction rather than a measurement, which is what they are asking you to do. The six week plan uses it as a starting guess and then corrects it with a sitting of your own.
What is deliberately not on this page
Advice about breathing, visualisation, or writing down your worries before you go in. The last one nearly made it: a Science paper reported a large effect from ten minutes of expressive writing before a high stakes test. It was one of the studies that failed to replicate when a large project retested twenty-one of them, so it is not here.
A site that argues you should check its sources does not get to keep the findings it likes after they fall over.
