How the bank is built

How a question gets in

A draft is written against one line of the outline. A public source is found that states the fact in its own words; the sentence is quoted verbatim and dated. The item is reviewed for cueing and clang against the rest of the bank, and either enters with an id or is logged as rejected with its reason.

What the scores mean, and do not

A domain band under about 20 items is a direction, not a measurement, so the report shows bands and raw counts rather than a decimal. The total is the number the literature considers reliable. No passing line is drawn because HSPA does not publish one.

Where the numbers come from

Nothing on this site is paraphrased from an aggregator or another prep site. Each figure below was read on the page that publishes it, and is stored alongside the sentence it came from, so the claim can be checked without taking our word for it.

How each figure is checked

1. It is read on the page that publishes it, not on a page that mentions it. The exam fee lives on the certification page, not on the statistics page, and mixing those up is how a wrong citation gets published.
2. The exact sentence is stored with the number. Storing the quote is what forces somebody to actually open the source instead of recalling it.
3. The date travels with the number, not at the bottom of the page. A dated observation stays true; an undated claim about the world goes stale on its own.
4. Derived figures are marked as derived. We do not present arithmetic as something the source said.

How the questions are written

Every question is scoped by the CRCST Exam Content Outline, revised November 2023, which is the blueprint HSPA publishes for the exam. That is what decides which topics appear and how many of each.

What decides the answer is different, and worth being exact about. Each correct answer is anchored to a sentence in a public standard we read ourselves: the CDC Guideline for Disinfection and Sterilization in Healthcare Facilities, OSHA 1910.1030, or HSPA's own published certification pages. All 180 questions in the bank carry that sentence, and the review screen shows it to you next to the answer. A question that cannot cite one does not ship, and a test enforces that rather than a promise.

The exam's own reference text is the Sterile Processing Technical Manual, 9th edition (2023). The 8th edition stopped being a current reference for the exam on July 1, 2024. We name it because the outline references it, not because anything here is drawn from it: it is a copyrighted book, and nothing on this site quotes or paraphrases it. That is also the honest limit of the current bank, and the reason some domains are thinner than others.

The outline assigns a percentage weight to each of the 7 domains, and a sitting is built to those weights rather than to whatever was easiest to write:

No question is taken from a real exam, and none is reworded from one. Sites that traffic in leaked items put the people who use them at risk of losing the certification they are studying for.

The hands on hours

The 400 hours are not one block. They are five separate minimums, and they expire after 5 years:

• Decontamination: 120 hours
• Preparing & Packaging Instruments: 120 hours
• Sterilization & Disinfection: 120 hours
• Storage & Distribution: 24 hours
• Quality Assurance Processes: 16 hours

There is also a provisional route: Provisional Certification: I will complete the required 400 hours of hands-on experience within 6 months of passing the certification exam.That is read from the exam application itself, and it is the answer to "can I sit the exam without the experience", which most of the internet answers with a flat no.

How precise a domain score can be

A score out of a handful of questions carries more uncertainty than it looks like it does, and that uncertainty is arithmetic rather than opinion. The margin below is the widest a 95% interval gets for a domain of that size. It is why our report shows bands and raw counts instead of percentages.

Comparing two sittings costs more precision than measuring once, because both measurements carry their own uncertainty. On the 25 free questions, a change has to clear about 28 points before it can be told apart from chance, which is roughly 7 questions. Within a single domain the bar is near 49 points, or about half the questions in it.

Two things follow, and we would rather write them down than have them discovered. Our study plan compares checkpoints on the total and shows domains as raw counts without a verdict. And a longer sitting is not a sales argument, it is the only way a per domain number becomes something you can act on.

What we do not know

The passing score. HSPA does not publish one, so neither do we. The cut is set by a panel of subject matter experts using the Angoff method and approved by the Certification Council, and candidates receive a pass or fail rather than a number, a process known as a standard setting study. Our score report shows your result without a passing line drawn on it, because any line we drew would be a guess.

How many questions come from each domain on a given form. HSPA publishes the weights, not the counts. We build a sitting to the published weights and say so, rather than claiming to know the exact composition of a real form.

Declaring a gap is more useful than covering it with an average somebody made up. When one of these is published, it goes here with the date we read it.

Every change to the question bank is recorded with its date and the part of the outline it tracks. This is what lets you tell whether the material follows the current outline or a version from years ago, which is a question most question banks do not answer at all.

For journalists and researchers

These figures are free to reuse with attribution to SterileExam and a link back. We ask only that you carry the date, because every one of them is a claim about a moment in time.

Where a number can be phrased more than one way, this is the form we use, so that a citation and this page say the same thing:

• Pass rate: 65.6% of 15,369candidates in 2025. Not "about two thirds", and the complement is 5,286 people rather than a percentage.
• Exam length: 150 questions in 3hours. Not "about 150" and not 200.
• Cost of a retake: $140, which is the same as the first attempt rather than a reduced fee.
• Hands on hours: 400 across five separate minimums, valid for 5years. Not "400 hours of experience" as a single block.
• Passing score: not published by HSPA. The correct phrasing is that HSPA does not release one, rather than that it is unknown.
