CRCST renewal

Renewal is not the same problem as the exam, and it does not get the same attention. Most CRCST content online is written for someone who has not passed yet. This page is for the other side of that: you already passed, you are already working, and the credential now has its own maintenance schedule that nobody hands you a checklist for.

If you already let it lapse and the grace window closed, the short version is worse than a paperwork problem: you are back to the beginning, passing the exam again, and the free practice test is where that starts. Everyone else, keep reading, because the whole point of this page is to make sure you never get there.

What renewal actually requires

The sheet above is the whole requirement. HSPA's own wording on the fee: There is a $50 fee required to renew your certification (no matter how many you may hold). If you would like to purchase membership as an optional addition, there is an extra fee of $10. One fee covers every HSPA credential you hold, not one fee per letter after your name.

What counts as a CE credit

CE is measured in hours, and the stated conversion is exact, with no rounding up: Continuing Education is to be accrued in hour increments: 1 hour equals 1 CE credit, ½ hour equals ½ CE credit, and ¼ hour equals ¼ CE credit.

The documented low cost route is HSPA's own reading lesson plans, published in PROCESS magazine, where each quiz passed online is worth 2 CE credits. College coursework counts too, if it is applicable to the field and passed with at least a C, and so do documented in-services at your own facility.

Worth saying plainly, because it will come up: the SterileExam practice test does not count toward your CE requirement. It is not an HSPA approved CE provider. It is useful if you are heading back to the exam after a lapse, and useless on your renewal form. What does count, and where it is free, is below.

Where the credits are, and what they cost

Here is the part almost nobody says out loud, and it is the single most useful fact on this page: you can cover the whole year without paying for a single credit. All 3 of the outside providers below publish their sterile processing courses at no cost, and they are not doing it out of kindness: they sell washers, sterilizers and instruments to the department you work in, and the education is how they get in front of it. That does not make the courses worse. It does mean you should never pay for a CE credit before checking these.

Every line in this table is quoted from the provider's own page, read on September 2, 2026. Where a page does not say who approves its credits, this table says that instead of guessing. Confirm the approval on the course itself before you count it: it is your renewal form, not ours.

HSPA runs its own lesson plans, on demand webinars and a podcast, and those are the first category in the table further up. This list is the outside providers, it is not exhaustive, and nobody paid to be on it: it is the ones whose own pages could be read and quoted. Two others that run sterile processing education, Healthmark and Pfiedler, are left off for one reason each: the first does not publish a price, and the second's site did not resolve the day this was checked. Neither absence is a judgement about them.

The deadline is your anniversary month, not January 1

This is the most common wrong assumption, and HSPA states it exactly: Certification renewals must be received no later than the last day of the anniversary month of your certification.If you were certified in March, your window closes at the end of March every year, regardless of when anyone else's does.

That also means the credits are not a loose calendar year total. They have to fall within your renewal year, the twelve months counting from your own renewal date.

If you miss it: the six week grace period

Here is the part almost nothing online explains clearly. Miss your deadline and HSPA does not cancel the certification outright: You will then automatically be granted a six week grace period in which to submit all past-due fees and CE credits.

During those weeks the status is not neutral: During this suspension period you are not considered certified and cannot use the title of CRCST, CER, CIS, CHL, CCSVP, or any other designation you may normally hold with HSPA. If your facility requires an active CRCST for you to work in central service, a suspension is a work eligibility problem that starts the day the deadline passes, not the day the grace period runs out.

Catch up inside the window and the certification is reinstated. Miss the window too, and the door closes: If all required fees and CE credits are not received before the end of your grace period, you will no longer be able to renew your certification(s). No further extensions will be available. At that point the only way back is to sit the CRCST exam again, from the beginning, the same $140 fee and 150 questions as anyone testing for the first time.

Why this matters at the scale it does

CRCST is not a small credential to be casual about losing. As of HSPA's published statistics, current to December 31, 2025, 54,525 people hold it, out of 55,688 HSPA certified individuals across all credentials. Every one of them is on this same twelve month clock, on a date specific to them, with a six week margin for error and no seventh week.
