Sterile Storage, Transport and Inventory Management is 9% of the CRCST exam. The shift is from asking how old a pack is to asking what has happened to it. A product stays sterile until some event contaminates it: a tear, wetting, a broken seal. The guideline supports this with study data and states the underlying finding plainly, which is that contamination is event related and the probability of it rises with handling.

Why a wet pack is contaminated

Moisture defeats the barrier and brings microorganisms with it from the air and from whatever surface the pack was resting on. A damp pack is contaminated no matter how good the rest of the evidence looks, and the guideline says the same thing from the other direction: a sterilized item is not used if the package is wet, torn or punctured.

Storage temperature and humidity

A limited access area, temperature up to 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and relative humidity that should not exceed 70 percent. Storage is the one work area with a looser humidity ceiling than the 30 to 60 percent that applies everywhere else, and the reason is that the packaging barrier is what is being protected.

A package hits the floor

Inspect it. That is the decision point rather than a formality, because the outcome depends on what the fall actually did to the barrier. If the package is heat sealed in impervious plastic and the seal is still intact, it is considered not contaminated, and items packaged in plastic need not be reprocessed if undamaged.

Handling after the cycle

The cycle produces a sterile item, and everything after it decides whether the item stays that way, so devices are handled using aseptic technique from the moment they come out. This is also why the guideline ties contamination to handling rather than to the calendar.
